For those suffering from severe underarm sweating – a condition that is clinically referred to as hyperhidrosis – BOTOX® or Dysport® injections can help. Hyperhidrosis can be an embarrassing and hard to disguise condition, which can affect a person’s confidence, productivity, and quality of life. The FDA has approved BOTOX® and Dysport® to treat hyperhidrosis when antiperspirants or other medications fail. Not only does this treatment alleviate the actual sweat, but it also reduces body odor (bromhydrosis).
Revive often performs BOTOX® or Dysport® injections for those experiencing profuse sweating of the underarms, hands, and feet. Our Certified Cosmetic Injectors first evaluate each individual to diagnosis hyperhidrosis and then customize a treatment plan based on personal needs. The number of BOTOX® or Dysport® units used, injection site, and frequency of treatment will vary with each client.
BOTOX® or Dysport® are purified proteins that block the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. By interrupting this chemical messenger, BOTOX® or Dysport® prevents sweat prevention at the injection site. Strategic and precise placement of injections is the key to effectively stopping the glands from producing sweat. A single treatment of several injections is typically sufficient to reduce sweating for several months; however, follow-up sessions are usually necessary to maintain results.
Prior to treatment, you will be prepped with a cleanse of the area. These areas are then marked for injection! BOTOX® or Dysport® injections are made in the skin near the sweat glands responsible for perspiration and are administered using a very fine needle. Injections are shallow and relatively painless, injected just below the surface of the skin, where they remain. Approximately 10-20 injections in each underarm are made. The standard dose is 50 units per underarm but may vary depending on the patient. Treatment time may take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the injection site. There is little to no downtime associated with this treatment, and most patients are able to return to their normal routine immediately.
You should notice an initial improvement in excessive sweating within about 2 weeks. Repeated treatment is safe and effective for hyperhidrosis and consistently results in long-lasting improvements and a significant reduction in excessive sweating, thus improving quality of life.
Using BOTOX® or Dysport® to treat hyperhidrosis is most effective when performed by a knowledgeable certified injector or nurse practitioner who is experienced with the procedure. The Certified Cosmetic Injectors at Revive at The Group Med Spa are highly skilled in using proper injection techniques that dispense the right amount of neurotoxin into the appropriate location.
The effects of BOTOX® or Dysport® injections usually last approximately 4 to 6 months. Although, some patients are free from excessive sweating for more than 7 months to a year.
Most patients do not experience side effects after treatment. However, localized pain or mild bruising may occur near the injection site for some people.
Many people also use BOTOX® or Dysport® to lessen the look of facial lines and wrinkles or in conjunction with dermal fillers in a procedure known as a “liquid facelift.”
